The couple had 2 local engagements – 1 in front of the court in Jersey City

Samantha and Stephanie Hagens are a Jersey City couple who have a lot of local connections in their love story. The duo have been married for four months and live in Jersey City with their three cats after a date with Hinge became a 7-hour pastime. One joint moving from New York to Hudson County to the local vendors they used for their wedding, read on to learn more about Samantha and Stephanie’s journey.

Hoboken girl: What are you both doing for a living?

Samantha + Stephanie: Samantha is a K-12 school psychologist and Stephanie is an emergency manager at NYU.

HG: When + Why did you move to JC?

S + S: Sam moved to Jersey City in 2017. She worked in New York and drove from the beach and just wanted to be closer but still live in a place that felt like there was a sense of community. Stephanie moved to JC in 2020 to move in with Sam. Originally, Stephanie said she would never move to the Hudson’s jersey, but Sam was adamant she would love JC. After much persuasion, Stephanie finally fainted and she never looked back. We love that Jersey City is such a cohesive community, everyone always cares for each other and supports each other.

HG: When / where did you meet your spouse?

S + S: We met in March 2019 through the Hinge dating app. Luckily we only worked a few blocks from each other in New York, so we ended up meeting at a local bar for Happy hour drinks – which turned into a 7-hour date.

HG: How long have you been together?

S + S: We have been together for three years and have been married for four months.

HG: Was there an immediate connection / chemistry between you two?

S + S: Yes! It really felt like love at first sight. We never run out of what to talk about and yet, three years later we learn new things about each other every day and we love it!

HG: What are your favorite traits in each other?

S + S: Stephanie loves Sam’s sense of humor and her ability to make friends with just about anyone. She also loves that Sam sings everything and everything, chores, to-do lists, anything that can be sung that Sam loves to sing. Sam loves Stephanie’s loyalty and passion for the things she cares about. She also loves that Stephanie is such a good mother cat to our three cats and how creative she is.

HG: When was the moment when you knew you were going to marry each other?

S + S: In September 2019 Stephanie attended a family wedding with Sam, where she met her family and all her friends. It was a two-hour drive to Connecticut – which became a 4-hour drive due to traffic jams – and Sam and Steph enjoyed listening to podcasts and singing, and when they got there they did not want the trip to end. Stephanie blended in so well with everyone and felt she really belonged there. This moment made us feel like it was something that would last forever.

HG: Tell us about your offer.

S + S: We each proposed to each other. Sam proposed marriage to Stephanie at home on their patio in JC. She decorated it with flowers and candles and then put bandanas on their cats who said “marry me”. Stephanie proposed marriage to Sam before the court in Jersey City because she knew Sam loved this building. She hired a photographer to capture the moment. She also took Sam’s friends on the matter because she knew Sam would not want to leave the house or get dressed (it was July 2020). So, she asked Sam’s friends to send her messages and invited her for drinks at their favorite restaurant (Luna JC). Sam complained that he should go, but still got dressed and went out and was so surprised!

HG: How surprised were you? Did you expect that?

S + S: We both expected it because everyone had a part in designing our rings, however, we were equally surprised by how it happened and how creative each of us was!

HG: How long have you been engaged and what was the best part of it?

S + S: We were engaged from July 2019 to December 2020. The best part was the support of four friends and family! We were so grateful for our friends and family who traveled near and far to be a part of all our special days. We are both very special so it was really fun to combine both our styles and aesthetics to create our perfect vision.

HG: Where did you get married?

S + S: We got married at the Ryland Inn at White House NJ Station. We actually found this because we looked at Liberty House in Liberty State Park and were told about all the different Landmark properties.

HG: What part of the wedding planning process were you most excited about and not expecting?

S + S: We enjoyed working with our suppliers and with most of the creative parts, like flowers and orders! The choice of local vendors was so amazing. We had a hard time reducing our stress and making sure it still takes us time so that only we enjoy the experience!

HG: How many people did you have at your wedding?

S + S: We had 120 people and it felt like a perfect amount.

HG: Do you use local suppliers? If so, which ones and why?

S + S: Yes! We used Karma Florals, The Hair Room JC, Love Locked for rings and jewelry, MoxieFox for details and Grace Brown Photo. Kerry from Love Locked was such an amazing part of our wedding planning process, she helped us design our engagement rings, wedding bands and all our bridesmaids jewelry. As soon as we met her we were completely amazed by her beautiful work!

Christine with floral karam fully understood our vision and we were amazed by her work at our wedding, our guests are still talking about it four months later!

We met Erin Fox during one of her pop-ups at Cannibal and loved her work. She created for us the most beautiful drink tablet that captured our three cats so perfectly.

We really can not speak highly enough of Grace Brown. She’s professional and personal – to the end, we just wanted to be her best friends. All our friends and family can not believe how beautiful our pictures came out. Sam hates being in front of the camera and Grace has managed to make everyone feel calm and truly capture the personality of both of us. She handled delicate family situations and high tensions with “grace” (lol) and professionalism and still took beautiful and timeless photos.
